BOMA Scholarships
THE JAMES R. GILDEA MEMORIAL EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP
An International Lifetime Member of BOMA International, Jim began his career in property management in the late 1950s when he joined The Galbreath Company in Pittsburgh, later moving to Louisville for the company. In 1982 he transferred to Columbus, where he continued his career (Galbreath later became known as JLL) until retirement after more than 45 years in the industry. Jim was a pillar of the property management industry and a great advocate of BOMA. He served as President of both the Columbus and Ohio Associations, and received one of the highest honors in BOMA, winning the International TOBY Award for the William Green Building. Jim managed notable properties in Columbus including The William Green Building, The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation Building and more.
The James R. Gildea Memorial Education Scholarship is to be awarded annually, honoring Jim's contributions to BOMA Columbus and his passion for promoting continued growth and education throughout his career. The scholarship will cover one BOMI designation course registration of the member's choosing for the calendar year of the award plus designation program enrollment fees if applicable (travel cost not included). Applicants and nominees must be an existing BOMA Columbus member in good standing; lifetime members not eligible. Applicants and nominees must be taking or starting BOMI courses to achieve professional designation and currently active as a committee member, chair/co-chair, and/or board member. Must apply or be nominated in writing by completing the online submission form. In the absence of the applications or nominations, the board may vote by majority to offer the scholarship to a selected individual or choose not to award the scholarship for that year.
THE GARY CALLIARI, RPA®,CPM® MEMORIAL CONFERENCE SCHOLARSHIP
After receiving business degrees from Duff's College and Bliss Business College, Gary spent the rest of his life in Reynoldsburg and Columbus, Ohio, where he built a distinguished career in property management until retiring from CBRE. He was dedicated to his field and, among many other properties, managed the Lincoln-LeVeque Tower and 280 Plaza in downtown Columbus, where he helped attain a LEED EB Certification, BOMA 360 Award, and two consecutive TOBY Awards. Gary earned his Certified Property Manager designation from IREM where he served as a Past-President, and a Real Property Administrator designation from BOMA, where he held many leadership positions including Past-President, Columbus. Gary was the life of any party, a music lover, an avid sports fan – unconditionally devoted to Penn State and the Steelers – a doting father, dog daddy, loyal friend to many and stranger to none. He brought his unwavering passion and strength to everything he did. "We Are!"
BOMI International offers professional development courses and programs for personnel with property, facility, or systems responsibilities. All of the BOMI courses may be applied toward one or more of our certificate or designation programs. BOMI's industry-recognized courses and programs have been proven to reduce operating expenses, increase overall efficiency, and enhance individual performance, adding value to any organization and making BOMI International the trusted source for education by industry professionals and employers. Professional designations include RPA, FMA, SMT, SMA, and HP.
The BOMI Educational Scholarship will be awarded to one BOMA Columbus Member seeking to continue their education or pursue their designations through BOMI International. This scholarship can be applied to any class hosted by BOMA Columbus. BOMA Columbus members must be in good standing and active as a committee member and/or chair or ch-chair and/or board member; lifetime members not applicable. Must apply or be nominated in writing by completing the online submission; in the absence of applications or nominations, the board may vote by majority to offer the scholarship to a selected individual or choose not to award the scholarship for that year.
The mission of BOMA Columbus is to advance the commercial real estate industry though advocacy, professional development and information exchange. Our vision is to be recognized as an industry leader in both legislative advocacy and professional development for a broad spectrum of commercial real estate professionals in the Columbus market.
The purpose of the BOMA Columbus Scholarship is to enable applicants to enhance their knowledge of the commercial real estate industry by attending a BOMA International Conference. BOMA Columbus will aid in the professional development of the applicant by providing a scholarship for one International Conference fee registration of the winner's choosing. Applicants must have active employment in the commercial real estate industry. Must be an active, Principal Member, in good standing and active in a committee and/or chair or co-chair and/or a board member of BOMA Columbus. Applicants and nominations must complete a written online application form.
This scholarship is awarded at the BOMA Columbus Annual Business meeting each year in November for the following year's registration.
J. Michael Coleman Scholarship Fund for Emerging Professionals - This scholarship fund is named in honor of J. Michael Coleman, BOMA Fellow, who passed away in 2020. Mike had a successful career in the security industry, working for more than 30 years as the top commercial real estate expert for AlliedBarton Security (now Allied Universal) before retiring in 2016. Mike’s generosity, dedication and mentorship were hallmarks of his active, decades-long involvement with BOMA. Among his many contributions to the BOMA community, Mike served on BOMA International's Executive Committee and the BOMA Foundation Board. The mission of the J. There are two scholarships available, the annual Conference & Expo Attendance Scholarships is awarded annually to up to 10 young or emerging professionals working in commercial real estate to attend BOMA International’s Annual Conference and Expo. The scholarship covers registration plus $1000 USD to be used toward other costs (travel, hotel etc.). Awardees are also invited to an exclusive Future Leaders networking reception.
The BOMA Foundation has also allocated a portion of the J. Michael Coleman Scholarship Fund to award scholarships to emerging professionals seeking to obtain the Certified Manager of Commercial Properties (CMCP) certification.
Two scholarships are available from the J. Michael Coleman Scholarship Fund:
Annual Conference & Expo Attendance - Awarded to up to 10 emerging professionals to attend the BOMA International Annual Conference & Expo. This scholarship covers registration plus $1000 to be used towards other costs (travel, hotel, ect.)
Certified Manager of Commercial Properties (CMCP) - Awarded to early-career property managers pursuing the CMCP certification. 2023 quarterly applications due March 1, June 1, September 1 and December 1.
