This is a very rewarding experience that all BOMA Columbus members are welcome to attend.  We welcome those BOMA members with an interest in the commercial real estate industry to spend some time with our local legislators on Wednesday, May 3rd.  We will schedule 15 minute appointments during that day and we welcome you to come for all day or whatever time works with your schedule.  Just register and we will email to check your availability.

Our meetings are scripted and you are given the topics BOMA Ohio is looking for support for.  We go in teams of 2 to 3 people so you are not alone in the meeting.  If it is your first time we invite you to come along and just observe!

Below is a description of the topics we (in conjunction with BOMA Ohio) will discuss this year:

1)      As he has proposed in the past, Governor Kasich would like to lower income taxes by increasing & expanding the sales tax. Three of the new sales tax proposals will impact BOMA members and BOMA as an association:

  • Interior design & interior decorating
  • Landscape design
  • Lobbying services

BOMA Ohio will, as it has in past budget cycles, advocate against the new sales taxes.
For some more background here are two recent articles describing pushback on the budget from the business community:

1)       Encourage legislators to continue supporting the Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit. We must continue to demonstrate how important this program has been to Northeast Ohio and the rest of the State.

2)       There are also two energy-related items we will be encouraging legislators to support.

oHere is the Alliance’s description of the issue at hand:
“Since Ohio deregulated its energy markets, Ohio consumers have saved big. Consumers who exercised their right to choose their energy provider saved nearly $3 billion last year. That means more jobs are being created and saved... While the big utilities of yesterday are trying to claw back their monopolies by limiting your right, energy deregulation remains strong in Ohio and deserves to be protected.”

  • Submetering:

oThe Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) recently issued an order where they asserted regulatory authority over submetering. BOMA Greater Cleveland and BOMA Ohio are involved the legal battle to fight back against the ruling, as it makes no differentiation between residential and commercial submetering. Legislation may be necessary to clarify these differences.

oWhat exactly is at stake?

  • Landlords that submeter and charge tenants, in the aggregate, a rate higher than the default rate charged by the local public utility are at risk of being considered a public utility. In short – your tenants could potentially file a lawsuit against you at the PUCO.
